Anoectochilus roxburghii Red — Jewel Orchid
Anoectochilus roxburghii Red is a foliage-focused jewel orchid for growers who enjoy the intricate beauty of miniature tropical planting. Jewel orchids are prized for their velvety leaves and striking vein patterns rather than large, showy flowers. This plant is offered under the name Red; colour intensity and leaf appearance can vary with maturity and growing conditions.
Give it a sheltered place in a carefully managed terrarium or humid plant cabinet, and its richly textured foliage can become a quiet focal point among mosses and other small tropical plants. Unlike orchids grown mounted on bark, this is a terrestrial orchid that needs an airy, moisture-retentive root environment.
What you receive
- One live Anoectochilus roxburghii Red plant.
- Scientific name: Anoectochilus roxburghii.
- Price: ₹1,200 per plant.
Light requirements
Provide low to medium indirect light, similar to a shaded forest-floor environment. Avoid direct sunlight, particularly strong afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves and overheat an enclosure. A shaded indoor position or a gentle grow light can work well. Position grow lights so they illuminate the foliage without warming or bleaching it.
Moisture and watering
Keep the root zone lightly and consistently moist, never saturated. Check the medium regularly and water as its surface begins to lose moisture, before the whole root ball dries out. Let excess water drain freely. Do not leave a pot standing in water, and avoid water collecting around the stem base.
Use room-temperature rainwater or low-mineral filtered water where possible. Water the growing medium gently rather than repeatedly soaking the foliage. Watering frequency should follow the actual moisture level, temperature and ventilation of the setup, not a fixed calendar.
Humidity and airflow
Provide high, stable humidity with gentle air exchange. A humid terrarium or plant cabinet is usually easier to manage than an exposed shelf in a dry room. Keep the plant away from air-conditioning vents, drying draughts and strong fan airflow. Humidity should not come at the expense of ventilation: continuously wet leaves and stagnant air can encourage deterioration.
Misting alone does not maintain lasting humidity and is not a substitute for watering the roots. If droplets remain on the foliage for long periods, improve gentle ventilation and reduce unnecessary misting.
Temperature and ideal growing conditions
Choose a stable, mild-to-warm environment, protected from cold draughts, abrupt temperature changes and excessive heat. Its ideal setup combines soft indirect light, high humidity, evenly moist but aerated roots and gentle airflow. Never place a glass terrarium in direct sun; heat can build up quickly even when the surrounding room feels comfortable.
Potting medium
Use a loose, fine-textured mix that holds some moisture while allowing air around the roots. Lightly packed sphagnum moss with perlite and fine orchid bark is one option; a suitable airy jewel-orchid mix can also work. Avoid tightly compressed moss, heavy garden soil or any medium that remains soggy. Keep the stem base at the surface rather than burying it deeply.
Terrarium placement
Plant in a sheltered, moist position above any pooled water. Leave room around the leaves so they are not pressed against wet glass or crowded by faster-growing plants. A humid enclosure can support this orchid, but it still needs monitoring for excess moisture, heat and poor air exchange. It is not an aquatic plant and should not be submerged.
Ongoing care
- Settling in: After arrival, place it in gentle light and stable humidity. Check moisture before watering and avoid immediate repotting unless the medium or roots need attention.
- Feeding: Apply a very dilute orchid fertiliser sparingly during active growth. Avoid feeding a stressed plant or allowing fertiliser salts to accumulate.
- Handling: Handle the delicate foliage and stems gently. Remove deteriorated leaves with clean tools.
- Repotting: Repot when the medium has broken down or root space requires it, taking care not to damage the fine roots.
Common care problems
- Crisp leaf edges or wilting: Check for dry roots, low humidity, excessive light or heat.
- Soft stems or yellowing with wet medium: Check for waterlogging and insufficient root aeration.
- Scorched or faded patches: Move away from direct sun or an overly intense grow light.
- Persistently wet leaves: Reduce misting and improve gentle air exchange.
Care level: Best suited to attentive growers who can maintain a stable, humid environment. Consistency and a balance between moisture and aeration are more important than frequent watering or feeding.
Each live plant is naturally unique. Leaf count, size, colour and vein patterns may vary with growth stage and growing conditions. This listing is for one plant.
