Anubias Nana | Premium Live Aquatic & Terrarium Plant | Easy Low-Light Plant

Anubias nana is a world-famous, slow-growing epiphyte known for its tough, dark green, heart-shaped leaves. It is a perfect foreground or mid-ground plant that should be attached to driftwood or rocks rather than buried in substrate. The thick horizontal stem (rhizome) must remain exposed to the water column; burying it will cause the plant to rot and die. Extremely hardy and “low-tech” friendly, it thrives in low light and does not require CO2 or specialized fertilizers. Because it grows so slowly, it is prone to spot algae, so placing it in shaded areas of the tank is often recommended.

Anubias Nana – The Classic Choice for Aquariums & Terrariums

If you're looking for one plant that almost everyone in the aquascaping and terrarium community recommends, Anubias Nana is it.

Native to the tropical regions of West Africa, this compact, slow-growing plant has earned its reputation as one of the easiest and most versatile aquatic plants available. Its deep green, leathery leaves remain attractive throughout the year, making it a favourite for both beginners and experienced hobbyists.

Although best known as an aquarium plant, Anubias Nana also thrives beautifully in humid terrariums, paludariums, vivariums, and other enclosed miniature ecosystems where moisture levels remain consistently high.

Unlike many delicate aquatic plants, Anubias Nana is remarkably forgiving. It grows well in low to moderate light, does not require CO₂ injection, and can be attached to rocks, driftwood, lava rock, or spiderwood rather than being planted directly into the substrate. This makes it ideal for creating natural-looking landscapes in aquascapes and terrariums.

Its compact growth habit also makes it perfect for nano aquariums, desktop terrariums, and decorative plant displays.

Planting Tips

Do not bury the rhizome (the thick horizontal stem), as this can cause the plant to rot.

Instead, gently attach the plant to rocks, driftwood, or decorative hardscape using cotton thread, fishing line, or aquarium-safe glue. Over time, the roots will naturally anchor themselves to the surface.

  • Java Moss
  • Fittonia (for terrariums)
  • Mosses
  • Cryptocoryne

Please Note

As this is a live plant, each specimen is unique. Leaf size, colour, and the number of leaves may vary slightly depending on the season and growing conditions.

Minor cosmetic imperfections are natural and do not affect the health or future growth of the plant.
