Add soft, feathery texture to your freshwater aquarium with Cabomba. Its finely divided, fan-shaped leaves create an attractive backdrop when the stems are planted in small groups, contrasting beautifully with broad-leaved plants and hardscape.
Pack size: 10 live stems. Price: ₹100 per pack.
Care at a glance
- Placement: Background, or midground with regular trimming.
- Difficulty: Moderate; good lighting and consistent maintenance are important.
- Light: Moderate to strong aquarium lighting. Avoid heavily shaded areas, as insufficient light can lead to stretched stems and loss of lower leaves.
- Light duration: Start with 6–8 hours daily on a timer. Adjust gradually based on plant growth and algae rather than extending the lighting period to compensate for weak light.
- CO₂: Added CO₂ is beneficial for fuller growth. Requirements vary by species; some green forms can grow without injection in a balanced aquarium, while more demanding forms benefit strongly from it. Balance light, CO₂ and nutrients.
- Water conditions: Clean, stable freshwater with gentle circulation. Temperature and pH preferences vary by species, so confirm the variety before using a species-specific care range.
- Growth habit: Upright stem growth; trim regularly to maintain the desired height and prevent shading.
How to plant your 10 stems
- Unpack promptly and gently rinse the stems in clean water. Remove any weights or packaging, and trim away damaged portions.
- Handle carefully to avoid crushing the fine leaves. Remove leaves from the lowest section of each stem that will be buried.
- Plant stems individually in aquarium substrate, with approximately 2–3 cm between stems. Bury only the lower bare section and keep the foliage above the substrate.
- Arrange in small groups where light can reach the lower leaves. Do not bury the entire bunch together or attach it to wood or rock.
Substrate and nutrition
Use an aquarium substrate that holds the stems securely. A nutrient-rich substrate is helpful, but sand or gravel can also be used with appropriate fertilisation. Cabomba benefits from nutrients in the water column; dose a complete aquarium plant fertiliser according to its label. Root tabs may supplement an inert substrate, but are not a substitute for balanced overall nutrition.
Trimming and propagation
Trim tall stems with sharp aquarium scissors. Replant healthy top cuttings after removing their lowest leaves. Leave healthy rooted bases in place to develop side shoots. Replace bare or deteriorating lower stems with healthy tops as needed, and remove loose cuttings from the aquarium.
Settling in and maintenance
Some leaf shedding can occur after transport or a change in conditions. Remove decaying material, keep lighting consistent and watch for healthy new growth. Perform regular water changes and keep suspended debris from collecting on the delicate leaves. Avoid rough handling, strong direct flow and fish that uproot or heavily graze plants.
If lower leaves disappear, check for shading, overcrowding, insufficient light or nutrient imbalance. If algae develops, review lighting duration, maintenance and the balance of nutrients and CO₂ before making large changes.
Please note
You will receive 10 live stems. Stem length, colour and fullness naturally vary. Inspect and consider quarantining plants before adding them to an established aquarium. Never release aquarium plants or cuttings into natural waterways.
