Unlike many aquatic mosses that tend to spread horizontally, Flame Moss is prized for its characteristic upright, slightly twisting shoots, creating an appearance reminiscent of flickering green flames.

What Makes Flame Moss Different?
While Java Moss tends to produce a more irregular, spreading growth, Flame Moss generally grows upward in compact, twisting strands.
Once established, this can create beautiful clusters of rich green foliage rising from wood or stone.

Small portions can be placed strategically along branches or within rock crevices. As the moss becomes established, its vertical growth can soften the hardscape while retaining the underlying structure of the aquascape.
For a more dramatic effect, several small clusters can be positioned at different heights throughout the composition.

Because Flame Moss grows differently from many common aquatic mosses, it can be used to introduce another layer of texture into an aquascape.

How to Use
Gently separate the Flame Moss into smaller portions and position a thin layer on your chosen hardscape.
It can be secured using aquarium-safe thread, fine fishing line or an appropriate aquascaping adhesive technique until established.
Avoid attaching excessively thick clumps. Smaller portions with good water circulation and access to light generally establish more effectively and allow the characteristic upright growth to develop.
Flame Moss vs Java Moss
If you're deciding between the two, their appearance is quite different:
Java Moss – irregular, spreading, naturally untamed appearance.
Flame Moss – more upright, twisting and structured growth.
Using both varieties in the same aquascape can create interesting contrasts in texture and growth direction.

The supplied quantity is approximately equivalent to a 2-inch square portion and may arrive loose rather than as a perfectly formed 2" × 2" mat. Once established under suitable conditions, the moss will develop its characteristic growth form.
