Labisia ‘Turtle Back’
Labisia ‘Turtle Back’ is a collector’s foliage plant prized for the textured, patterned leaves that inspire its turtle-shell nickname. Its sculptural foliage brings a different kind of detail to a tropical collection: instead of relying on flowers, the leaves themselves become the focal point.
Give it a sheltered position in a humid plant cabinet or a suitably spacious tropical terrarium, where you can appreciate its leaf texture alongside softer mosses and fine-leaved planting. It is best suited to attentive growers who can maintain stable conditions rather than an exposed, dry windowsill.
Plant identity and what you receive
- One live Labisia ‘Turtle Back’ plant.
- Botanical identification: Labisia sp., sold under the horticultural name ‘Turtle Back’. A species-level identification is not supplied for this listing.
- Price: ₹4,200 per plant.
Light requirements
Provide gentle, filtered light or low to medium indirect light. Protect the plant from harsh direct sunlight, which can scorch the foliage and rapidly dry its growing medium. A shaded indoor position with useful ambient light or a carefully positioned grow light is preferable to deep darkness. Keep strong grow lights far enough away to avoid heating or bleaching the leaves.
Moisture and watering
Keep the medium evenly, lightly moist without leaving it saturated. Check moisture regularly and water when the surface starts to lose moisture, before the root ball becomes completely dry. Water thoroughly enough to moisten the root zone, then allow excess water to drain. Do not leave a pot standing in a water-filled saucer.
Adjust watering to the actual conditions: a humid enclosure may need water much less often than an open pot. Use room-temperature water and consider rainwater or low-mineral filtered water if your tap water is hard. Avoid repeatedly soaking the leaves or allowing water to remain trapped around the plant’s base.
Humidity and ventilation
Maintain high, stable humidity with gentle airflow. A humid plant cabinet or well-managed terrarium can make this easier than a dry, air-conditioned room. Keep it away from drying draughts and air-conditioning vents. The aim is humid air, not continuously wet leaves or stagnant conditions.
Misting offers only a short-lived rise in humidity and does not replace a suitable growing environment. If foliage stays wet for long periods, reduce misting and improve gentle air exchange without directing a strong fan at the plant.
Temperature and ideal conditions
Provide a warm, stable tropical environment, avoiding cold draughts, abrupt temperature changes and excessive heat. The ideal balance is soft indirect light, high humidity, an airy root zone and consistent moisture. Protect any glass enclosure from direct sunlight, as internal temperatures can rise quickly.
Potting medium
Choose a loose, moisture-retentive but well-aerated mix. Fine coco coir or a suitable peat-based component can retain moisture, while perlite and fine bark help prevent compaction. Avoid heavy garden soil, tightly compressed moss and any mix that remains waterlogged. Use a pot with drainage and keep the plant’s base at its existing planting depth rather than burying it deeply.
Terrarium and cabinet placement
Allow generous space around the foliage and room for future growth. Choose a moist planting position above pooled water, and avoid pressing leaves against wet glass. Check that neighbouring plants do not crowd or shade it excessively. A terrarium should be large enough for the specimen and managed for both humidity and air exchange; this is not a plant for submerged aquarium use.
Ongoing care
- After arrival: Let the plant settle in gentle light and stable humidity. Check the medium before watering and avoid immediate repotting unless the roots or substrate require attention.
- Feeding: Feed sparingly during active growth with a very dilute, balanced fertiliser. Do not fertilise a stressed plant or allow salts to accumulate.
- Leaf care: Handle the textured foliage gently. Remove dust carefully without scrubbing, polishing or applying leaf-shine products.
- Maintenance: Remove deteriorated leaves with clean tools and inspect the leaf undersides and growing points regularly for pests.
- Repotting: Repot when root space or deteriorating medium makes it necessary, minimising root disturbance.
Common care problems
- Crisp edges or drooping: Check for dry medium, low humidity, excess heat or direct airflow before adding more water.
- Yellowing with wet medium: Check drainage and root aeration rather than watering again.
- Scorched or faded patches: Reduce direct sun or excessive grow-light intensity.
- Soft growth or persistent leaf wetness: Review watering and improve gentle ventilation.
Care level: Best for growers comfortable managing humidity and substrate moisture. A stable environment and careful observation are more valuable than frequent watering, feeding or repotting.
Each live plant is naturally unique. Leaf size, number, colour and pattern may vary with maturity and growing conditions. This listing is for one plant.
