Red Ruby Moss — Selaginella erythropus

Red Ruby Moss (Selaginella erythropus) brings intricate, fern-like texture and a subtle flash of ruby colour to a tropical plant collection. Its delicate green foliage reveals rich red undersides, creating a beautiful contrast as the leafy sprays spread and overlap. Despite its common name, this is a spikemoss, not a true moss.

Place it among lush green planting in a humid terrarium and its fine texture adds a miniature woodland feel. It is best suited to growers who can provide steady moisture, high humidity and protection from harsh sunlight, rather than a dry windowsill or an exposed, air-conditioned room.

What you receive

  • One healthy, live potted Red Ruby Moss plant.
  • Scientific name: Selaginella erythropus.
  • Supplied as a potted plant, not loose moss or cuttings.

Light requirements

Provide gentle, filtered or medium indirect light. A shaded position with good ambient light suits it better than direct sun, which can scorch or dry its delicate foliage. In a terrarium, a suitably positioned grow light can provide consistent illumination without exposing the plant to intense heat. Avoid placing a glass enclosure in direct sunlight.

Moisture and watering

Keep the growing medium consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Check moisture regularly and water before the root zone dries out completely. In a pot, allow excess water to drain away and do not leave the base standing in water. In a terrarium, add water sparingly according to the actual moisture in the substrate, rather than following a fixed watering schedule.

Rainwater or low-mineral filtered water is a useful choice, particularly where tap water is hard. Misting may briefly moisten the foliage, but it does not replace watering the roots or maintaining a suitably humid environment.

Humidity requirements

High, steady humidity is important for keeping the fine foliage in good condition. A humid terrarium, enclosed plant cabinet or similarly sheltered growing space is generally more suitable than ordinary dry indoor air. Keep it away from air-conditioning vents, fans blowing directly on the plant and drying draughts. Maintain gentle air exchange without sacrificing humidity.

Temperature and ideal conditions

Choose a warm, stable tropical growing environment, protected from cold, sudden temperature swings and excessive heat. Its ideal setup combines filtered light, high humidity, evenly moist roots and an airy substrate. Avoid hot, stagnant conditions and never allow a sealed glass container to overheat in the sun.

Potting medium and terrarium use

Use a moisture-retentive yet airy growing medium. A fine coco coir or peat-based mix with perlite and a little fine bark can help balance moisture retention with aeration. Avoid dense, compacted soil that stays saturated. When planting in a terrarium, choose a moist position that is not submerged or sitting in pooled water.

It can add fine-textured planting around terrarium features, provided there is space for growth and the foliage is not continually pressed against wet glass. This is a terrestrial plant, not an aquarium plant for permanent underwater cultivation.

Ongoing care

  • After arrival: Let the plant settle in a shaded, humid location and check substrate moisture before watering. Avoid immediate heavy feeding or unnecessary root disturbance.
  • Pruning: Remove damaged or dried foliage gently with clean scissors. Light trimming can help keep the plant within its allotted space.
  • Feeding: Feed sparingly during active growth with a very dilute, balanced fertiliser. Avoid concentrated fertiliser or frequent feeding.
  • Dry, crispy tips: Check for low humidity, drying substrate, harsh light or direct airflow.
  • Soft or deteriorating growth: Check for waterlogged substrate, pooled water and insufficient air exchange.

Care level: Best for attentive growers or a well-managed humid terrarium. Consistency matters more than frequent intervention: keep it moist, sheltered and humid without keeping the roots saturated.

Each live plant is naturally unique. Size, shape and colour intensity may vary with growth stage and growing conditions; the ruby colouring is most noticeable on the undersides of the foliage.
