Java Moss – Taxiphyllum barbieri

Bring a naturally aged, lush appearance to your aquascape with Java Moss (Taxiphyllum barbieri), one of the most popular and adaptable live aquatic mosses used in planted aquariums and naturalistic water features.

Its fine, branching growth gradually forms soft green mats over rocks, driftwood and other hardscape, making it particularly useful for creating the impression of an established underwater landscape.

Each pouch contains an approximately 2-inch square portion of live Java Moss, ready for use in your planted setup.

Easy & Versatile Aquatic Moss

Java Moss is popular because it is relatively undemanding and adaptable compared with many specialised aquatic plants. It can be allowed to grow freely or attached to driftwood, Spiderwood, rocks, mesh and other aquarium-safe surfaces.

Over time, the moss can spread across the surface, softening hardscape and creating a more natural appearance.

It is suitable for:

  • Planted aquariums
  • Aquascaping
  • Paludariums
  • Ripariums and humid planted environments
  • Moss-covered rocks and driftwood
  • Naturalistic planted tanks
  • Creating moss walls and carpets using suitable mesh or supports

Perfect for Natural Aquascaping

Java Moss works particularly well when you want to create an established, organic appearance rather than a heavily manicured planted tank. Small portions can be positioned in crevices between rocks or attached to branches to gradually create areas of dense green growth.

It pairs beautifully with Dragon Stone, Seiryu Stone, Lava Rock, Spiderwood and driftwood, making it a useful plant for both simple planted tanks and more elaborate aquascaping projects.

Basic Care

Light: Low to moderate
Difficulty: Easy
Growth: Moderate
CO₂: Not essential, although suitable CO₂ and nutrient conditions may encourage healthier growth
Placement: Rock, wood, mesh or other hardscape
Environment: Freshwater aquatic and suitably humid setups

For a neat appearance, Java Moss can be periodically trimmed once established.

How to Use

Separate the moss gently into smaller portions if required and position it on your chosen hardscape. It can be secured using aquarium-safe thread, fine fishing line or an appropriate aquascaping adhesive technique until it becomes established.

Avoid placing the moss in excessively thick clumps, as thinner layers generally allow better light and water circulation.

Please Note

As this is a live plant, colour, density, strand length and overall appearance may naturally vary from pouch to pouch. The supplied quantity is approximately equivalent to a 2-inch square portion and may not form a perfectly shaped 2" × 2" mat.

Product images should therefore be considered representative of a living plant rather than an exact depiction of every portion supplied.
